Natural Clay Plaster Workshop in NYC, 5/18

Join me at beautiful Drew Gardens Bronx on Sunday, May 18th, 1 PM – 3:30 PM to learn about clay plaster! We will be discussing the nature of clay plaster, the sustainability and health benefits, and its long dance with humanity all the way from prehistory to modern high-end architecture. You’ll see the process of formulating a durable earthen plaster from site-dug soils and plant fiber, and learn how each ingredient plays a role. Then we’ll have a demonstration on how to apply clay plaster to beautify and protect hand-sculpted earthen walls.

This is a hands-on workshop: in each step, participants will get tactile experience with the materials. Participants will have the opportunity to apply their new skills in real time by helping plaster the cob chicken coop I helped Drew Gardens build last autumn! This makes for a great setting to talk about the broader context of clay in wall systems, and the compatibility between different materials.

This workshop is suitable for ages 16 and up, and any experience or knowledge level. If you’ve never been to a natural building workshop, this is a great way to get that experience right here in the city. Don’t just touch grass. Touch dirt!

Spots are limited, so please register in advance to secure your spot. I hope to see you there!
