Register for Boston Clay Plaster Workshops

Learn about natural plasters with me in Medford, MA! We are running three sessions this summer.

In just three hours, you’ll learn the basics of how to formulate and apply a durable and beautiful clay plaster from local soil, straw, and sand. We’ll also discuss and demonstrate lime plasters, giving a complete overview of natural plasters.

Clay and lime plasters are ancient and highly effective ways to seal many types of walls, and you might be surprised to learn how many applications they have, from traditional buildings to modern renovations and artistic applications. The best part is, they are nontoxic and totally DIY-able.

This is a hands-on workshop: in each step, you will get tactile experience with the materials. Clay plaster is one of the most delightful natural building materials to work with: cool, squishy, clayey, and just begging to be frosted onto a wall like a giant cake. You’ll have the opportunity to apply your new skills in real time by plastering a light straw-clay tiny house! This makes for a great setting to talk about the broader context of clay in wall systems, and the compatibility between different materials.

Topics include

  • The science of how clay and lime plasters work
  • How to formulate and test a plaster
  • The 3-coat system
  • How to mix and apply plasters
  • Tools
  • Hybrid clay-lime plasters
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Materials sourcing
  • Basics of lime chemistry
  • What plasters can be used on
  • Further resources

Suitable for ages 16 and up, and any experience or knowledge level. All you need is curiosity and an urge to get your hands dirty! If you’ve never been to a natural building workshop, this is your chance to get that experience right here in the city!
