After an exciting start to the workshop season with “Plastering Spring”, we are excited to be entering “Cob Oven Summer”! The June cob oven workshop in Keene, NH is sold out, but fear not: we are holding another cob oven workshop close to Boston on July 11-12, in Lincoln, MA.

July 11-12: Cob Oven Workshop at Hazen Hill Homestead
Join us at this beautiful home and organic flower farm in Lincoln, MA for a weekend building a cob oven! Using locally dug Boston Blue Clay, sand, and straw, we’ll sculpt a timeless earthen oven between the trees.
Throughout this hands-on weekend, workshoppers will learn about how the soil under our feet can be used to make strong, fire-resistant, and near-indestructible structures. This mix of clay, sand, and fiber known as cob has been used for millennia across the world to build not just ovens, but buildings, towers, and now, modern homes.

No matter what level of experience you have, you’ll be welcomed here to jump in the mud and discover a different sort of building. Here, we rediscover that building the means of meeting our needs can not only be sustainable, but fun, creative, healthy, and social.

Lunch is provided both days, made with fresh produce from the land. There will be plenty of time for Q&A on all things natural building, and you’ll have a chance to make a small cob souvenir to take home!

Tickets are priced on a sliding scale of $250-$450.
Lodging and Transportation: Lodging is not included. Folks are encouraged to take advantage of the Lincoln MBTA Commuter Rail stop a few miles away, to carpool, to walk, and to bike! Registrants will be added to a shared spreadsheet, to offer or request transportation and lodging.

Plus, Walden Pond is just a few miles away—perfect for a refreshing post-workshop dip!

Getting Plastered in Providence
We rounded out our amazing pair of clay plastering workshops in Providence at the end of last month. Another awesome group of adventurous folks descended upon this unsuspecting urban neighborhood for a weekend of stomping in the clay.
Some highlights of our finish clay plaster workshop:
Cattail fluff that “explodes” off the stick!

Warm gooey wheatpaste foot spa experience

Guest appearance by Carl Lindgren demonstrating finish plaster technique!

We had an amazing time: huge thanks to the Providence Preservation Society for supporting these workshops, and for homeowners Jeff and Aisha for welcoming the community into their journey.

You can read more about this project in this lovely article by the PPS: Natural Building as an Act of Preservation.
I have many more updates to share as this exciting year gets rolling, but that’s all for today! Have a lovely spring weekend, and I hope to see you in the mud.
